Rhamnolipid biosurfactants

Biosurfactants are a novel group of microbial compounds exhibiting power and versatility across several industrial applications.  New microbial strains, breakthroughs in production, increasing environmental awareness and tightening of regulations regarding synthetic surfactants are driving investigation and use of biosurfactants.

Rhamnolipids are glycolipids containing L-rhamnose and β-hydroxyl fatty acids, with amphiphilic properties (both hydrophilic and hydrophobic).  They are highly biodegradable, non-toxic, and renewable.  Functional roles include bioactive, surfactant, emulsifier and biocide.

Surfactant and emulsion properties of rhamnolipids include reducing the surface tension of water to 26 dynes/cm,  having a CMC of 40-65 mg/L , and decreasing the IFT of oil and water to <1 dyne/cm.  Rhamnolipids provide good detergency/foaming/wetting, stable microemulsion formation,  and solubility under high alkalinity.  They are mild with skin-friendly attributes.

Rhamnolipid biosurfactants are superior to synthetic surfactants for several reasons: their CMC is 10-40 times lower (less material is required to achieve reduction in ST/IFT); they are easily biodegradable with very low toxicity (having higher EC50 values); they are not as affected by temperature and pH; and they are sustainably produced.
